Archers from across the SWWU empire assembled in Norwich this weekend to compete in the Beiter Hit-Miss tournament, a unique head-to-head competition in which pairs of archers (one compound and one recurve) shoot at plastic discs in the hope of eternal glory…
Ben Trudgill (Exeter) and Alec Hodgkinson (Cardiff Met) shooting under the name of The SWWU-Tang Clan, and Joe Stout Fay (Swansea) and Will Shackley (Swansea) a.k.a The Pillage People ranked highest of the SWWU teams in joint 18th place out of 50 teams, with 34/60 hits. The SWWU-Tang Clan eased through their first and second round matches, before being knocked out in the last 16 round of the top flight, finishing in 9th place overall. Joe and Will won their first two matches before being knocked out in the quarter finals of the top flight.
Matt Walker (Swansea) and Tom Braxton (ex-Cardiff / SWWU wannabe) shot under the name of Romeo and SWWUliet, seeding joint 24th with a total of 31/60 hits. They breezed through the first H2H match 7-2 before eventually succumbing to two members of the Team GB squad in their first match of the top flight. And no Matt, freshers flu isn’t an excuse.
Not to be outdone, Joe Tripp (Plymouth) and Alex Rowe (Plymouth) competed under the name of Recurve and Training Wheels, with Alex competing as a compound archer for the first time. They also scored 31/60 hits, ranking joint 24th and won their first head-to-head match before being knocked out in their first top flight match.
William Murphy (Swansea) and David Jenner (Swansea) a.k.a. The Shamrock and the Rose ranked 28th with 30/60 hits. Their first head-to-head match was an all-Swansea bout against The Equip(t)ment Officers, Tom Jackson (Swansea) and Michal Niebudek (Swansea), who had seeded 37th with 23/60 hits. Tom and Michal emerged victorious, moving into the top flight, where they were edged out in their next match. William and David won their first match in the second division but were knocked out in the quarter finals.
Bradson’s beans, made up of Steffan Benson (UWTSD) and Emma Brand (Leeds) ranked 37th with 23/60 hits, losing their first head-to-head match before making it all the way to the semi finals of the second division, narrowly missing out on a place in the finals. Gavin Tsang (Swansea) and Nicole Almond (Swansea), a.k.a “Wait… What was their name again?” also ranked joint 37th with 23/30 hits. They won their first match, but were knocked out of their first top flight match by last years’ winners.
And finally, Matt Butler (Swansea) and Max Fudge (Swansea) a.k.a The Soviet SWWUnion seeded joint 42nd with 19/60 hits. They won their first head-to-head match, putting them into the top flight, where they were knocked out in the last 32.
If this sounds like fun… It is! And the discs will return for the British University Team Championships in March!
